Over 5.3 million Ugandans have renewed their National IDs—but according to the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), the finish line is still a long way off.
Speaking to journalists , NIRA Registrar General Claire Ollama said the public response has been strong, but warned that the momentum must increase if the country is to meet its six-month deadline.
“Ugandans have spoken with their feet,” Ollama remarked. “More than 5.3 million have already turned up. That’s no small feat. But let’s not get comfortable—we’re not there yet.”
At the current weekly average of 840,000 renewals, it would take nine months to complete the process—three months past the target.
“We signed up for a sprint, not a marathon,” she said, urging all hands on deck. “Local leaders, parishes, communities—this is your call to action.”
Ollama emphasized the urgency: “Every week matters. Every ID counts. The faster we move, the sooner we unlock the benefits of a secure, inclusive, and digital Uganda.”
The nationwide ID renewal campaign is part of a broader effort to strengthen Uganda’s national database, which is essential for citizens to access government services, financial platforms, and national programs.
