At least 29 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) were arrested ahead of a scheduled campaign rally by presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango, the group was apprehended for allegedly blocking the Mityana Highway.

Although Kyagulanyi rerouted his campaign convoy through Hoima Road,  the expected Mityana Highway route, a charged crowd of his supporters had already gathered at Bujjuko Trading Centre.

They reportedly disrupted traffic with drums, whistles, and political chants.

Despite joint police deployments aimed at ensuring peaceful campaigning, the situation escalated, leading to arrests on charges of unlawful assembly, obstruction of traffic, and incitement to violence.

“We support peaceful campaigns but will not tolerate disruptions,” said SSP Onyango.

He urged all candidates and their supporters to adhere to designated routes and traffic regulations during the election season.

Kyagulanyi’s campaign has generated significant enthusiasm in Mityana, drawing large crowds. However, Monday’s incident underscores the ongoing challenge of balancing political expression with public order as Uganda approaches the 2026 general elections.
