Uganda Police registered at least 196,405 criminal cases in 2025, marking a 10.2 per cent decline from the 218,715 cases recorded in 2024, according to the latest annual crime report.
The report, released on Monday by Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba, points to a notable reduction in overall crime, even as concerns remain around prosecution and road safety.
Of the total cases reported, 115,301 were forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), with 79,291 eventually taken to court.
“A total of 24,899 cases resulted in convictions, leading to 31,732 individuals being convicted and sentenced,” Byakagaba said.
Meanwhile, traffic-related offences also registered a significant decline. Police recorded 322,441 traffic cases in 2025, down from 426,432 in 2024—a 24.4 per cent drop.
Despite this improvement, road crashes remain a major concern. The report indicates that 26,044 accidents were recorded during the year, including 4,602 fatal crashes, 13,563 serious incidents, and 7,879 classified as minor.
The findings highlight both progress in crime reduction and ongoing challenges in road safety and case resolution within the justice system.
