Police in Kampala have arrested Issa Sekito, the acting Chairman of the Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA), following chaotic scenes that erupted over the flooding of the Nakivubo drainage channel and a rent hike in the city centre.
The floods along the Nakivubo Channel damaged several shops and destroyed property, prompting Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja to visit the area to assess the progress of the ongoing drainage project.
Sekito was reportedly arrested downtown Kampala by a team of police officers and is currently detained at the Central Police Station (CPS). His arrest was confirmed by ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police.
“The Police at Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala have arrested Issa Sekito, the acting Chairman of KACITA, to assist in investigations. The team is yet to record his statement and prefer appropriate charges against him,” Owoyesigyire said.
According to Owoyesigyire, police also arrested 13 other suspects on allegations of inciting violence and assaulting police officers who were on lawful duty. He added that the case file has been forwarded to the Resident State Attorney for review and legal advice.
“We continue to urge members of the public to remain calm and desist from acts that may incite violence or threaten the safety of others, particularly those who have chosen to open their shops and continue with normal business in the city centre,” he said.
Owoyesigyire further noted that police will maintain a visible presence and heavy deployment in the city centre to deter any illegal activities and ensure that law and order prevail.
