The Public Relations Association of Uganda and Makerere University Business School have stepped up efforts to bridge the gap between classroom training and industry demands following a high-level engagement in Kampala.

The meeting, involving the PRAU Governing Council and the Department of Marketing and Media Studies at MUBS, focused on strengthening collaboration to better prepare students for the fast-evolving communications and marketing landscape.

At the centre of the discussions was the upcoming Marketers and International Business Week, a flagship event scheduled for the end of April, which both sides see as a critical platform for hands-on learning, mentorship and industry exposure.

Officials said the initiative comes at a time when employers are increasingly demanding practical skills, adaptability and digital competence from graduates entering the communications field.

The two institutions explored opportunities for joint programmes, knowledge exchange and increased student participation in industry-led activities, in a move aimed at narrowing the long-standing disconnect between academic training and workplace expectations.

PRAU, which is marking its 50th anniversary this year, said it is placing greater focus on partnerships that promote innovation, professionalism and relevance in the communications sector.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that closer collaboration will not only enhance student readiness for the job market but also strengthen the overall quality of public relations and marketing practice in Uganda.

The engagement reflects a broader shift toward deeper cooperation between academia and industry as both sides seek to shape a workforce that is better equipped to meet modern communication challenges.
