President Vladimir Putin has expressed deep condolences to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian following the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, and members of his family.
In a message addressed to Tehran, Putin strongly condemned the killing, describing it as a brazen act that violated fundamental principles of morality and international law.
“Please, accept my deepest condolences on the assassination of Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran Seyyed Ali Khamenei and members of his family, committed in cynical violation of all norms of human morality and international law,” he said.
The Russian leader paid tribute to Khamenei’s legacy, crediting him with playing a pivotal role in elevating relations between Moscow and Tehran to what he described as a comprehensive strategic partnership.
“In our country, Grand Ayatollah Khamenei will be remembered as an outstanding statesman who made an enormous personal contribution to the development of friendly ties between Russia and Iran,” Putin noted.
He conveyed solidarity with Iran’s leadership and citizens during what he described as a moment of profound national loss.
“Please, convey my most sincere sympathy and support to the family and friends of the Supreme Leader, as well as to the leadership and to the entire people of Iran,” Putin said.
