Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Sam Omala is in critical condition, Daily Star has learned. He is battling cancer-related complications. He is receiving treatment at Mulago Hospital.

Omala, who served as the Kampala North Police Operations Commander, retired from the police force in 2020 upon reaching the retirement age of 60. He is widely remembered for his role in quelling opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye’s walk-to-work protests in 2011.

After retirement, Omala lived a quiet life until 2023, when he was appointed Deputy CEO of Operations at Arrow Security Systems Limited, a private security company owned by Captain Mike Mukula.

In November last year, Omala’s son, Mutukuvu Devine Omala, revealed that his father’s health had deteriorated significantly, rendering him unable to speak properly. Mutukuvu said his father had asked him to publicly apologize on his behalf.

According to Mutukuvu, Omala was first taken to Nairobi for treatment after battling cancer for some time.
“We took him to Nairobi when he could still talk and walk. However, he collapsed while there, and the doctors reported that his blood pressure was critically low,” he said.

After being stabilized, Omala requested to return home.
“We brought him back in a wheelchair. A few days later, his condition worsened, and we rushed him to Mulago Hospital. Doctors conducted several tests and discovered that, in addition to cancer, he was also suffering from kidney complications,” Mutukuvu added.
