Rev. Canon Joshua Kugonza has been consecrated and enthroned as the third Bishop of Masindi-Kitara Diocese in a colorful ceremony held at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Masindi town.
The event was presided over by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu.
In his sermon, Archbishop Kaziimba called on Christians and the wider community to offer their prayers and support to the new bishop and his leadership team.
“I urge all Christians and people of God to stand with Bishop Kugonza. My brother, you have been called at such a time as this to guide God’s people. Be a pastor, teacher, counselor, and defender of the truth. You are not a political leader but a shepherd to all, both near and far. Continue loving the people and encouraging hard work,” he said.
The Archbishop emphasized unity, spiritual revival, and hard work, advising the new bishop to steer clear of political entanglements while focusing on pastoral duties.
“This young diocese has achieved a lot in a short time. I encourage you to walk together with the new bishop and elevate Masindi-Kitara to new levels of spiritual and economic development,” he added.
Bishop Kugonza expressed gratitude to his predecessor, the Rt. Rev. George William Kasangaki, for his leadership and his significant role in the construction of St. Matthew’s Cathedral.
“I commend Bishop Kasangaki for laying a strong foundation for this diocese. I pledge to continue with key projects such as securing land titles for all churches, promoting tree planting for environmental conservation, and strengthening our health and education ministries,” said Bishop Kugonza.
He also vowed to improve household incomes and food security by supporting diocesan SACCOs and utilizing government initiatives like the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga.
Rt. Rev. Kasangaki, who has served for 15 years, thanked church members, political leaders, civil servants, and the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom for their support during his tenure.
“This is a moment of transition. I thank my fellow bishops, clergy, and the faithful for walking this journey with me. I now pass the mantle of leadership to Bishop Kugonza with confidence,” he said.
Grace Mary Mugasa, Minister of State for Public Service, delivered a message from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who praised the Church’s contribution to national development.
“I recognize the vital role the Church plays in promoting peace, unity, and development. Your ministry has been a beacon of hope for the people of Masindi and beyond,” President Museveni noted.
He urged Bishop Kugonza to lead with integrity and pledged the government’s continued support for Church-led initiatives aimed at uplifting communities.
