Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has contributed Shs50 million towards the Rajiv Ruparelia Memorial Free Eye Health Camp, a major medical outreach expected to restore sight and improve the lives of thousands of people in Eastern and Northern Uganda.
Among, who also serves as the Bukedea Woman Member of Parliament, announced the support as preparations intensified for the three-day eye camp scheduled to take place March 27–29, 2026, at Bukedea Teaching Hospital.
Organised by the Ruparelia Foundation, the outreach will provide specialised eye care services including eye screenings, cataract surgeries and free distribution of spectacles to residents from Bukedea and neighbouring districts.
The initiative was launched on March 10, at Kabira Country Club in Kampala, drawing partners, friends and well-wishers of the late Rajiv Ruparelia, whose philanthropic spirit continues to inspire community programmes aimed at improving people’s lives.
Speaking at the launch, Among applauded the Ruparelia family for sustaining Rajiv’s legacy of generosity through initiatives that directly benefit vulnerable communities.
“Rajiv was a staunch advocate of philanthropy, and I wish to thank his family for ensuring that his legacy continues to transform lives,” she said.
The Speaker also commended the Ruparelia Foundation for complementing government efforts by extending critical health services to communities that often struggle to access specialised care.
“I thank the Ruparelia Foundation, led by my brother Sudhir Ruparelia, for supporting government initiatives by bringing essential services closer to the people and serving humanity,” she added.
Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, chairman of the Ruparelia Group, praised Among for her continued support to the family and for the compassion she showed his late son.
“I want to thank Anita Among for the love she always showed Rajiv while he was alive and for standing with our family even today. Your support to this eye camp reflects your deep concern for the people of Bukedea and Uganda,” he said.
Sudhir revealed that the memorial eye camp will not be a one-off initiative but a biennial programme aimed at reaching underserved communities across the country.
“This will become a regular outreach held every two years in different regions so that more Ugandans can benefit. After Bukedea, the next camp will be organised in Kasese District,” he announced.
Speaking on behalf of the Ruparelia Foundation, Jyotsna Ruparelia expressed gratitude to Ugandans for the support the family has received over the years, noting that giving back to the community remains a core value of the foundation.
“Ugandans have always shown the Ruparelia family immense love and support. Through initiatives like this, we hope to give back in a meaningful way by improving people’s lives,” she said.
The Bukedea medical outreach is being implemented in partnership with Mulago National Referral Hospital and C-Care, bringing together specialised medical teams to deliver critical eye care services to communities that often lack access to such treatment.
During the camp, patients will receive free eye examinations, cataract screening, reading glasses, children’s spectacles and cataract surgeries for selected patients.
Residents from Bukedea, Soroti, Mbale, Gulu, Lira, Tororo and Kapchorwa have been encouraged to attend the camp and take advantage of the free services.
The initiative is also supported by several corporate partners, including Swastik Pharmaceuticals, Dembe Trading Enterprises, Abacus Pharma, Goldstar Insurance, Pepsi, Royal Pharma 2011 Ltd, Joban Group, Risha International Ltd, Lato Milk and Gittoes Pharmaceuticals.
