The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has unveiled the Kayoola EVS 2025, a flagship electric bus developed by Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC).
The grand reveal took place during the closing ceremony of National Science Week 2025, held under the theme “Made in Uganda: From Innovation to Market.” The event ran from Sunday, June 15 to Friday, June 20 at Kololo Independence Grounds.
Speaking at the unveiling, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa applauded KMC for its groundbreaking achievements, emphasizing Uganda’s strong progress toward self-reliant innovation.
“It is time to believe in our own,” Tayebwa said. “What we import from abroad doesn’t compare. These are home-grown solutions, built by our own people, for our own needs.”
KMC CEO Paul Isaac Musasizi expressed strong confidence in the electric bus model’s impact on the transport sector.
“We are optimistic that the introduction of this new model will create significant opportunities not only for commuters but also for transport entrepreneurs. The vehicle supports a more sustainable and profitable business model thanks to its use of affordable energy,” he noted.
“Compared to fuel-powered vehicles, users save over 78% in energy costs and more than 46% in annual maintenance expenses. This electric bus is not just a smart mobility solution—it’s a smart economic one.”
The Kayoola EVS 2025 stands as a powerful symbol of Uganda’s growing capacity to design, engineer, and produce world-class electric vehicles. Designed for the vibrant rhythm of African cities, it boasts:A range of up to 350 kilometers, Seating for 56 passengers and Modern amenities including Wi-Fi, HVAC, USB charging ports, ECAS suspension, CCTV, and an inclusive, accessible design for all users.
More than just a vehicle, the Kayoola EVS 2025 is a moving declaration of innovation, resilience, and the strength of homegrown technology.
The significance of the day was further marked by the official handover of a Kayoola EVS 2025 unit to the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA). This milestone underscores the integration of green mobility into Uganda’s critical aviation infrastructure and affirms the nation’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing service delivery at key transportation hubs.
Furthermore, the handover represents growing confidence in Uganda’s high-tech, locally manufactured innovations—laying the groundwork for a thriving domestic electric vehicle market and driving the technological progress needed for national economic transformation.
