At least ten people have died, and three others have sustained injuries in a fatal road crash that occurred at Busowa Town Council along the Busia Highway in Bugiri District.

The crash involved a Toyota Hiace (UBN 817H) and a trailer (UA 647BA/UA 430AA).

According to SP Kananura Michael, the spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety at Uganda Police, preliminary investigations suggest that the driver of the Toyota Hiace attempted to overtake an unidentified vehicle. However, another vehicle was approaching from the opposite direction.

In a bid to avoid a head-on collision, the driver swerved left, lost control, and crashed into a stationary trailer. The impact killed ten people on the spot, including the driver, and left three others injured. All of the deceased and injured were passengers in the Toyota Hiace.

“Our team responded promptly, rushing the survivors to the hospital and transporting the bodies of the deceased to the mortuary,” he said. “Investigations into the crash are underway.”

He also urged all motorists to refrain from reckless behavior, such as speeding and unsafe overtaking, which continue to be major causes of crashes on the roads. Drivers are reminded to exercise maximum caution and prioritize safety at all times.
