At least three people are feared dead after an Isuzu Elf truck transporting maize lost control and plunged approximately seven meters into the fast-flowing waters of Karuma Falls on Monday evening.
According to Susan Kataike, the spokesperson for Ministry of Works and Transport, yesterday at about 7:00 pm, a loaded truck with maize heading from the Gulu side was stopped by the police at a roadblock.
“The driver refused to stop and drove through the roadblock at Karuma junction. Unfortunately, it plunged into the river at the bridge. No structural damage has been noticed on the bridge. Only about 6m of guard rails have been deformed,” She said.
Fuse truck carried maize produce from Lela Obaro in Bobi Sub County, Nwoya District heading to Kololo in Kiryandongo District.
Police say the truck was carrying several occupants at the time of the crash. So far, one body has been recovered, while search and rescue efforts continue for others who are still missing.
