A dramatic police operation in Lungujja, Mengo, Rubaga Division, Kampala City, on the evening of 28 June 2025, ended in the death of three suspected robbers, with two others still on the run.

At approximately 8:00 PM, officers from Nateete Police Station were on routine patrol in the area when they heard desperate cries for help coming from a roadside mobile money shop. A man was raising an alarm as a group of robbers attempted to steal a black bag containing cash.

Responding swiftly to the distress call, the officers arrived at the scene to find the victim engaged in a violent struggle with the suspects. As the Officer in Charge (OC) moved to apprehend one of the attackers, another suspect pulled out a machete (panga), prompting an officer to fire a warning shot into the air. Startled by the gunfire, the assailants fled the scene.

The police motorcycle squad pursued the suspects to the Mengo Stabex fuel station, where a brief but intense shootout ensued. Two suspects were shot dead on the spot, while a third sustained serious injuries and later died en route to Mulago Hospital. Two other suspects escaped the scene on a numberless motorcycle and remain at large.

Police recovered several items at the scene, including a black bag containing UGX 8,435,000, two mobile phones used for mobile money transactions (MTN and Airtel), the victim’s National Identity Card, and house keys. Officers also seized two motorcycles—one bearing registration number UGE 294X (a maroon Haojue) and another without a number plate—along with two pangas believed to have been used in the robbery attempt.

Authorities have praised the swift and coordinated response by the police patrol and motorcycle squad, which prevented further harm and secured vital evidence.

Efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining suspects. Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or information that may aid in the arrest of the fugitives.
