Police in Kampala have launched an investigation into the circumstances under which a speeding bus collided with a moving train on Thursday morning.

The incident involved a Trinity Express bus and a Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) passenger train at the Namumira railway crossing in Mukono District.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the Trinity Express bus—registration number RAH 629B and driven by Bulya Erat—failed to stop at the railway crossing and was struck by the train, registration number 73U32, operated by Munyarurembo Henry.

“The train damaged the rear part of the bus, but fortunately, no lives were lost and no injuries were reported,” Onyango said.

Police officers responded promptly to the scene, recorded witness statements, and are carrying out further investigations.

Both vehicles and their operators were taken to Uganda Railways offices in Kyetume, where the bus driver is assisting with the ongoing inquiry.

In a statement, the Uganda Railways Corporation confirmed that its technical team had been dispatched to re-rail the locomotives and restore normal operations.

“Our team is currently on site to re-rail the locomotives and ensure resumed operation. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience and understanding during this time,” URC stated.

The corporation also used the incident to caution motorists against recklessness at level crossings, stressing that trains operate 24 hours a day.

“At any given time, a train may be crossing a road between Kampala and Malaba, Port Bell, or Nalukolongo. We urge motorists to approach railway crossings with caution,” the statement added.

The accident led to the suspension of morning commuter train services, leaving hundreds of travelers stranded. Many were forced to switch to road transport, leading to heavy traffic congestion along the Kampala–Mukono highway.

Police have reiterated the need for caution among drivers, especially near railway crossings.

“We want to remind all motorists that speeding and failure to observe traffic regulations can have serious consequences. Drivers must follow safety guidelines, particularly at railway crossings, to avoid such incidents,” Onyango emphasized.
