Uganda Christian University (UCU) has introduced strict new dress code guidelines for its law students, effective June 5, 2025, in a move aimed at aligning student conduct with the values of the university and the legal profession.

According to an internal memo seen by Daily Star, the university is enforcing the guidelines “pursuant to the exigency to reinforce the School of Law student dress code in line with the core values of the University and the legal profession that students aspire to join.”

“Effective June 5, 2025, all LLB students will be required to wear suits every Monday and Thursday without exception. No student will be allowed into classrooms, the main library, or the School of Law offices without adhering to this dress code,” the memo reads.

The university said the suits should be black in colour, worn with a long-sleeved white shirt, a neck tie for male students and black shoes. Suits and shoes of a different colour, sandals, canvass shoes and shoes that expose the toes will not be permitted.

“On all days of the week, all LLB students are required to have well kept hair. Coloured or tinted hair will not be permitted. Male students with hair of unacceptable styles and fashions shall also be prohibited from accessing classrooms, the main library or the School of Law offices,” the university said in a memo.

UCU stated that the aim of these new measures is to establish clear expectations for professionalism and decorum, both within and beyond the university setting.

“These measures are intended to reflect the university’s values and to prepare students for the professional standards of the legal field,” the memo emphasized.
