Uganda has launched the first phase of its 2025–2026 General Elections Roadmap by conducting polls for Village Older Persons Committees — a key step forward in the nation’s democratic process.

This specialized vote gives citizens aged 60 and above the platform to elect representatives who will champion their interests at the grassroots level. To cast their vote, seniors must be listed in both the National Voters Register and the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Register for their respective villages.

These local committees play a vital role in ensuring that senior citizens’ voices are not just heard but actively shape local governance. For many older Ugandans, this is more than fulfilling a civic responsibility — it’s an empowering opportunity to influence decisions that impact their daily lives.

Voting is currently taking place across the country’s villages, with the Electoral Commission partnering with local authorities to maintain an orderly, secure, and accessible process. Ensuring safety and transparency remains at the forefront, so every eligible elder can participate without barriers.

This vote sends a clear message: a healthy democracy includes everyone. By enabling older citizens to elect their own leaders, Uganda acknowledges their lifelong contributions and ongoing influence in society.

As the opening act of the new electoral cycle, this election lays the groundwork for a broader, inclusive, and peaceful voting season across the country.
