The Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Somalia, Raisedon Zenenga, has praised the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) troops serving under the United Nations Guard Unit (UNGU X) in Somalia for their professionalism and dedication. He highlighted their role in enhancing confidence among UN personnel and upholding Uganda’s reputation.

“UNGU X has carried out its duties with professionalism and dedication. Their efforts in protecting the UN in Mogadishu have enabled the organization to achieve its mandate by providing a secure and enabling environment,” Zenenga stated.

Speaking during the change of command ceremony for UNGU X in Mogadishu, Zenenga lauded the troops for their commitment and reaffirmed the UN’s deep appreciation for their service.

The event marked the transfer of command from Lt Col David Emmanuel Odong, who completed his one-year tour of duty, to Lt Col Peter Ruyogoza Barigye.

Lt Gen Sam Kavuma, the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) Force Commander, reminded the troops of their vital mandate to provide security for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) and the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS).

Commending Lt Col Odong for his leadership, Lt Gen Kavuma acknowledged his role in safeguarding communities, securing key infrastructure, and strengthening trust in Somalia. He urged Lt Col Barigye to maintain the high standards set by his predecessor, emphasizing leadership through unity, collaboration, and leading by example.

Recognizing the resilience of the Somali people and the dedication of the troops, Lt Gen Kavuma stressed that while Somalia’s path to stability is challenging, it is achievable through courage, integrity, and respect for humanity.

In his remarks, Lt Col Odong expressed gratitude to the UPDF leadership for the opportunity to serve in UNGU and contribute to peacekeeping efforts. His successor, Lt Col Barigye, pledged to build on previous achievements, thanking the UPDF leadership for their trust and committing to close collaboration with UN partners.
