The Commander of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Contingent under the United Nations Guard Unit (UNGU-XI), Lt Col Peter Ruyogoza Barigye, has commissioned a newly installed internet network tower at the Emergency Response Team (ERT) Company headquarters in Mogadishu, Somalia.

The state-of-the-art mast was constructed by UNGU-XI network engineers from the Joint Staff Communication, Information Technology, and Signals (JSCITS) unit.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Lt Col Barigye commended the UPDF leadership, along with JSCITS engineers and technicians, for their dedication in designing and installing the mast to meet the unit’s operational requirements.

“Always consult the ICTS department whenever you experience any technical issue to avoid unnecessary damage,” he advised.

Lt Col Barigye emphasized that the new tower represents a significant advancement in the unit’s ability to respond to threats and safeguard UN personnel and assets.

“This network tower is a game-changer for our operations. It will enable us to respond more quickly and effectively to emerging situations and enhance our overall situational awareness,” he said.

Capt Mansur Lukyamuzi Mupenzi, UNGU-XI Communications Officer and head of the ICTS unit, noted that the installation of the mast and additional network boosters had resolved long-standing connectivity challenges.

Capt Joseph Maada Edube, the UNGU-XI Military Information Officer, also emphasized the operational benefits, stating that the enhanced network will significantly boost their capabilities.

Representing the ERT Company Commander, Lt Fred Kirya expressed gratitude to Lt Col Barigye and the CITS team for their support.

“The installation of this mast marks a major milestone in our efforts to leverage technology and improve operational readiness,” he said.

He also acknowledged the ongoing support of the United Nations and other stakeholders in promoting stability and security in the region.
