Ugandan troops serving under the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) have eliminated a key Al-Shabaab commander during a successful operation in the Lower Shabelle region.

Osman Hussein Bune Amiir, widely known as the general commander of Al-Shabaab fighters in Lower Shabelle, was killed in a tactical ambush conducted near Buulomareer by troops from the Buulo Mareer Forward Operating Base (FOB).

Brigadier General Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, the Sector One Commander, hailed the operation as a “decisive blow against Al-Shabaab,” commending the soldiers for their professionalism and bravery.

This operation demonstrates the continued effectiveness and resolve of AUSSOM and the UPDF in degrading terrorist capabilities and restoring peace in Somalia,” Brig Gen Ssemwanga stated.

The ambush also resulted in the recovery of critical items including: A pistol with three loaded magazines, A binocular, A porch, Two mobile phones  and Additional materials of intelligence value

Brig Gen Ssemwanga reaffirmed the commitment of AUSSOM, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), and international partners to dismantling terrorist networks and promoting long-term stability in Somalia.

Major David Ogweng, Commander of Buulo Mareer FOB, expressed appreciation for the continued support and leadership of Brig Gen Ssemwanga.

“Your guidance has been instrumental in our operational success,” Maj Ogweng said. “Our troops remain fully committed to their mission of ensuring peace and stability for the Somali people.”

Following the operation, Brig Gen Ssemwanga conducted inspection visits to Forward Operating Bases in Quoryoley and Goloweyn to assess troop welfare and evaluate operational readiness.

The elimination of Osman Hussein Bune Amiir is considered a strategic victory in ongoing efforts to neutralize high-ranking Al-Shabaab leaders and disrupt their command structures.

This operation underscores the UPDF’s steadfast commitment to the African Union’s peace and security mandate in Somalia, and its role in counter-terrorism operations across the region.
