The U.S. government has issued a security advisory to its nationals amid the ongoing presidential nominations taking place in Kampala.
Earlier today, the Electoral Commission commenced the nomination process with the incumbent President Yoweri Museveni of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) being the first to be nominated. He was followed by Elton Joseph Mabirizi, President of the Conservative Party (CP), and Robert Kasibante of the National Peasants Party (NPP).
In its advisory, the U.S. Embassy urged American citizens to avoid multiple locations in and around Kampala, including Independence Park in Kololo, Katwe Grounds, parts of Wakiso District (particularly the Lweza–Lubowa area), the Old Entebbe Road leading to Entebbe Airport, and Kaala Playground in Nateete.
“The Ugandan Electoral Commission is holding nominations for presidential candidates on September 23 and 24, 2025. There will be rolling road closures throughout Kampala on these two days, as well as checkpoints, barriers, and increased police and security presence to manage crowds,” the advisory stated.
The embassy further urged U.S. nationals to remain alert in the identified areas, monitor local media for updates, avoid crowds and demonstrations, and keep a low profile.
“Notify friends and family of your safety, be aware of your surroundings, review your personal security plans, and carry proper identification, including a U.S. passport with a valid Ugandan visa,” the statement added.
