George Bogere, an employee of the US Embassy and a resident of Luteete Village, Kasangati Town Council in Wakiso District, has died in the devastating floods that hit Kampala.

The heavy rains, which struck yesterday, caused severe flooding, cutting off several roads and claiming at least seven lives. By yesterday, police had retrieved five bodies.

“He was an employee of the U.S. Embassy in Kampala and tragically drowned while riding a motorcycle early this morning,” said Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson.

Authorities continue to assess the situation and urge the public to exercise caution during heavy downpours.

“The Kampala Metropolitan Police, in coordination with the Police Fire Prevention and Rescue Services, continues to respond to multiple emergency calls following the heavy downpour that affected various parts of Kampala. The intense rainfall caused severe flooding, leading to motor accidents, pedestrians being swept away by fast-moving water, and significant property damage,” Owoyesigyire stated.

“Three bodies were recovered from the Kinawataka area and are yet to be identified. Additionally, two children, identified as Otim Kisa Eliza (3 years old) and Ochaka Chon (11 months old), tragically drowned in their home in Mulimira Zone, Bukoto.”

Preliminary reports indicate that the children’s mother, Lenunu Rose Mary, had locked them inside the house while she went to work. She has since been arrested by Kira Road Police on allegations of negligence, as neighbors claim this was a recurring practice.

Owoyesigyire added that police rescue teams remain on the ground, assessing the situation and providing necessary assistance.

Authorities have urged the public to take precautionary measures during heavy rains, including: voiding unnecessary movement during downpours to prevent accidents; Advising boda boda riders not to risk crossing flooded roads and to wait until water levels recede and ensuring homes are secure and children are safe, especially during extreme weather conditions.
