Police and the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) are searching for individuals behind the demolition of part of St. Balikuddembe Market, commonly known as Owino Market.

At approximately 10:00 p.m. on the night of March 7, 2026, unidentified individuals descended on a structure forming part of the market located along Sebana Road at the boundary of the Nakivubo Channel and unlawfully demolished it.

According to the city authority, the demolition was carried out under the cover of darkness without obtaining a demolition permit, making the act illegal.

“The KCCA, in collaboration with sister agencies, is currently working to salvage what remains of the structure and ensure that those responsible for the destruction of this public property are brought to book,” the authority said in a statement.

Police have since arrested the operators of the two machines that were being used in the demolition, and investigations into the incident have commenced.
