Makindye East MP Nyeko Derrick has announced his withdrawal from the 2026 parliamentary race, just days before the National Unity Platform (NUP) is expected to announce its parliamentary flag bearers.

Nyeko, the incumbent, had earlier picked nomination forms under NUP to contest for re-election. However, sources within the Kavule-based party indicate that the party flag was instead handed to Ali Kasirye Mulyanyama, the current Makindye Division Mayor,

In a statement released earlier today, Nyeko expressed gratitude to his supporters and reflected on his time in leadership.

“It is with a heart full of joy that I have served you with honour, respect, and a deep commitment never to betray the trust of your vote,” he stated.

“I know this decision may not be easy for my team and supporters to receive, especially after our strong belief that we would once again win the Makindye East MP seat.”

He added that the decision to step down came after deep personal reflection and does not negate the achievements and progress made during his tenure.

“After deep reflection, I have made the difficult decision not to offer myself for election in the coming polls. This choice does not diminish the journey we have walked together, nor the victories we have achieved. It is my hope that the spirit of unity, resilience, and service to our people will remain stronger than ever.”

Nyeko’s exit marks a notable shift in the political dynamics of Makindye East, where he has served as a vocal and influential legislator.
