World Netball (WN) has announced a bold new global events strategy, with the first phase of changes including its pinnacle event, the Netball World Cup (NWC) being held every two years, as well as the introduction of a men’s NWC.
The news follows on from WN’s recent announcement that from NWC2027 onwards, the format and schedule of the NWC will change, including the exciting introduction of Cup and Plate competitions.
This is all part of WN’s wider mission under its strategy to develop and deliver a pipeline of international events that showcase the very best of its sport to more people more often, taking netball into a new chapter.
After the NWC2027 in Sydney, all future NWCs will take place in November, with the new two-year NWC cycle meaning the following NWC will be in November 2029.
The new WN events window allows for consistency and certainty for all key stakeholders including Members, fans, media partners, commercial partners, and, most importantly, athletes.
In addition, it does not disrupt the domestic calendars in key markets where there are professional leagues.
WN also plans to launch a new biennial event from November 2028, that will take place in non-NWC years.
The hosting of this event will be a key deliverable built into any future NWC hosting agreement.
This will ensure a world class international event takes place every year, meaning the best players in the world will be competing against each other more often in environments of real meaning – building rivalries, expanding reach, and lighting up new markets.
Speaking on these developments WN CEO Fiona Harold, said: “International netball has never been more competitive, but the landscape is becoming increasingly complex to navigate.
“WN needs to support its Members and deliver solutions that mean everyone in the ecosystem benefits.
“We also absolutely need to be proactive about futureproofing ourselves given the uncertainty around the Commonwealth Games post 2026.
“These decisions allow us to control our destiny and it’s positive news for everyone.
“As the International Federation, it is our job to sustain and grow the game over the long term.”
On the introduction of a men’s NWC, Harold added: “Whilst World Netball will always remain proud of the sport’s traditions, we must not be held hostage to them.
“Our sport is open to all and now feels like the right time to make a clear statement on the men’s game, which is gaining momentum rapidly.
“The resounding feedback from many stakeholders across the game is that this is a really positive step, especially as we continue to strive and build our case for Olympic Games inclusion.
“I have enjoyed engaging with men’s netball groups over the past few months and we will continue to collaborate with them to help them realise their dream of seeing an inaugural men’s Netball World Cup happen in the next few years.”, Harold said.
WN is already having initial conversations with Members and 3rd parties regarding hosting rights for 2028-2035 with a formal process launching imminently.
Following on from the above, WN has also taken the decision to pause the FAST5 Netball World Series (FAST5 NWS) for the time being.
Multisport games will continue to be a key part of WN’s global events strategy, and the International Federation will continue to explore any additional opportunities that will benefit the sport and its Members, including the introduction of an international club competition.
