Buganda Road Court has released five members of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), including Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, activist Ingrid Turinawe, Phiona Kyabayiza, Faridah Nangonzi, and Shadia Namubiru, after they spent three weeks at Luzira Prison.
Nyanjura and the group were arrested in Kampala while protesting against the continued detention of former presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye. The protests followed a Supreme Court ruling that dissolved the General Court Martial, where Besigye was being tried for allegedly conspiring against the Ugandan army by engaging in activities in Nairobi, Kenya, and reportedly holding meetings in Greece and Switzerland.
Appearing before Grade One Magistrate Winnie Nankya, the group was granted a non-cash bail of Shs 500,000 each, while their sureties were required to pay a non-cash bond of Shs 1 million.
The accused are facing charges of being a public nuisance on the road.
