At least five people have lost their lives in the recent Kampala floods, the Daily Star can reliably report. The revelation was made by Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan.

The bodies of the deceased have been transported to the City Mortuary, Mulago, for postmortem examination.

“The Kampala Metropolitan Police, in coordination with the Police Fire Prevention and Rescue Services, continues to respond to multiple emergency calls following the heavy downpour that affected various parts of Kampala early this morning. The intense rainfall caused severe flooding, leading to motor accidents, pedestrians being swept away by fast-moving water, and significant property damage,” Owoyesigyire stated.

He confirmed that five people had lost their lives due to the flooding. “Three bodies were recovered from the Kinawataka area and are yet to be identified. Additionally, two children, identified as Otim Kisa Eliza (3 years old) and Ochaka Chon (11 months old), tragically drowned in their home in Mulimira Zone, Bukoto.”

Preliminary reports indicate that the children’s mother, Lenunu Rose Mary, had locked them inside the house while she went to work. She has since been arrested by Kira Road Police on allegations of negligence, as neighbors claim this was a recurring practice.

Owoyesigyire added that police rescue teams remain on the ground, assessing the situation and providing necessary assistance.

Authorities have urged the public to take precautionary measures during heavy rains, including: voiding unnecessary movement during downpours to prevent accidents; Advising boda boda riders not to risk crossing flooded roads and to wait until water levels recede and ensuring homes are secure and children are safe, especially during extreme weather conditions.
