The Ministry of Works and Transport, in coordination with the Uganda Police Directorate of Traffic, has suspended operations of YY Coaches for 15 days following a series of road crashes linked to reckless driving, Daily Star has learned.
The announcement was made by Fred Byamukama, Minister of State for Works and Transport.
“During this suspension, authorities will inspect driver badges and permits, review driver schedules and training history, and investigate the use of aged or potentially underqualified drivers,” Byamukama stated.
The minister added that operations may resume only after a full compliance review and satisfactory corrective measures by the bus company.
This action follows a tragic road crash in Makindu Village, along the Kisoga–Nyenga Road in Buikwe District, where a YY Company Scania truck (registration number UAV 701C) lost control and overturned before catching fire.
The vehicle, en route from Katosi to Jinja, was reportedly speeding when the driver lost control, resulting in a fatal accident that claimed multiple lives and left several others injured. The exact number of casualties and identities of the deceased are yet to be confirmed.
The government says the temporary suspension is part of broader efforts to enforce road safety regulations, hold transport operators accountable, and prevent further loss of life on Ugandan roads.
