The NRM Government led by President Museveni has made significant achievements in the health sector, including improvements in infrastructure, human resources, disease prevention, and maternal and child health.
The recognition of these champions highlights the government’s commitment to improving healthcare outcomes in Uganda. The champions include notable individuals such as Dr. Jane Aceng, Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa, First Lady Janet Museveni, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Dr. Ben Mbonye, Dr. Charles Olaro, Dr. David Nahamya, Dr. John Omagino, Dr. Jackson Orem, and Dr. Rosemary Kusaba.
Dr. Magoola Mathias was honoured for leading the biggest bio pharmaceutical plant in East and Central Africa known as Dei Biopharma which is spearheading the construction of a multibillion pharmaceutical plant at Dei Biopharma, which is described as the African Centre of Excellence.
Dei Biopharma led by Dr Mathias Magoola has been involved in massive public awareness and information dissemination regarding achievements of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in the health sector through distribution of achievements posters countrywide.

Speaker Anita Among has consistently focused on ensuring a sound health sector to serve the common people of Uganda. She established a hospital in Bukedea serving people from the entire Teso subregion.
Dr. Diana Atwiine was recognized for combating corruption in the health sector while also fighting mismanagement, institutional incompetence, and stealing of drugs from hospitals. She has streamlined drugs delivery systems.
The government’s efforts have led to notable achievements in various areas. Health facilities have been upgraded, and staff housing constructed to address accommodation shortages. Over 976 staff housing units have been constructed. Specialized facilities like Mulago Super Specialized Hospital and Lubowa Specialized Hospital have been invested in, with nine hospitals constructed with World Bank support.
Dr Ben honoured for establishing nakasero Hospital which tops the private health sector in offering high quality medical services.
Dei Biopharma specializes in developing and manufacturing innovative medicines and vaccines. It was commissioned on July 6, 2021, by President Yoweri Museveni and Kenya President William Ruto (then Vice President).
It is an iconic drugs and vaccines manufacturing facility in Matugga, Wakiso District, Uganda. Africa’s largest biopharma icon, leading pharmaceutical innovation on the continent. Accessible, affordable, and innovative healthcare for Africa’s self-reliance in medicines and healthcare.
Around 300,000 posters featuring the champions will be distributed countrywide, mostly to NRM structures, businesses, and communities. President Museveni has dedicated himself to transforming the health sector, boosting public-private partnerships, and promoting sustainable investment in healthcare.
The government has invested in upgrading and rehabilitating health facilities, constructing staff housing, and expanding access to essential medical supplies. There have also been successes in disease prevention, particularly through immunization programs and the “Test and Treat” policy for HIV/AIDS. The operationalization of Mulago Super Specialized Hospital and the expedition of the construction of Lubowa Specialized Hospital are also sector priorities.

In addition, 381 health center IIs have been upgraded to HC IIIs, improving access to maternal health services. Efforts are ongoing to improve maternal and child health indices and achieve Sustainable Development Goals. The government has also invested in high-capacity oxygen plants and improved drug supply through a digital system.
The recognition of these champions underscores the importance of investing in health workforce financing and promoting sustainable investment in healthcare. The Uganda Health Sector Transformation Champions awards demonstrate the power of collaboration and dedication in driving progress in the health sector.
As Uganda continues to forge ahead on its journey toward Universal Health Coverage, the contributions of these champions will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the country’s healthcare landscape.
