President Yoweri Museveni has revealed that corruption has infiltrated State House, with reports indicating that some individuals were paying bribes of up to Shs 30 million to have their issues presented to him.
“People were paying money Shs 30 million just to ensure that the president sees their letters. It’s true. When I would see the letter, I would respond and provide a solution, and the person who delivered the letter would get paid,” Museveni said.
He added, “We have arrested them. Many of those offices are completely clogged with parasites. I have many sources of information I don’t rely on just one person. Eventually, we get the truth because the NRM is a benevolent organization. We are not vicious. Often, those involved in wrongdoing eventually question themselves and come forward to confess.”
According to Museveni, in July, some whistleblowers who obtained critical information found it difficult to report the issue through official channels.
“They couldn’t trust anyone not the GISO, not the DISO. So they came looking for my daughter. Imagine, they went to my daughter Natasha Karugire because she is known in the media and they thought she might have access to me. They approached her friend, Marcella Karekye.”
Museveni noted that although Karekye works at State House, she doesn’t have direct access to him.
“So what does she do? She goes to Natasha, who then took the matter to the Director General of Intelligence because the system is dead,” he explained.
