Mike Mukula has withdrawn from the race for NRM Vice Chairperson, Eastern Uganda, announcing his support for fellow candidate David Calvin Echodu.
This development marks a significant shift in the regional political landscape as the ruling party prepares for upcoming internal elections.
“After careful reflection, sober consideration, and with a clear conscience, I have taken the difficult but principled decision to withdraw my candidature for the position of National Vice Chairman (Eastern Region),” Mukula said in a statement.
He emphasized that the decision was not made lightly, highlighting his longstanding commitment and service to both the NRM and the people of Eastern Uganda.
“I have been privileged to serve with loyalty, dedication, and unwavering commitment. My record speaks for itself—in advancing the values of the NRM, mobilizing support, and contributing to the stability and development of our nation,” he said.
Mukula raised serious concerns about the integrity of the ongoing campaign process, citing widespread corruption, open voter bribery, and excessive spending aimed at influencing delegates.
“The exercise has been marred by practices that undermine the very spirit, values, and historical mission upon which the NRM was founded. They erode the moral fabric of our Movement and threaten to delegitimize our internal democratic processes,” he stated.
He declared that continuing to participate under such conditions would be tantamount to endorsing illegality and compromising his principles.
“I therefore choose principle over expediency, conscience over convenience, and integrity over position,” Mukula said.
“My withdrawal should not be mistaken for weakness or indifference. On the contrary, it is an act of conviction and political maturity—a clear stand against the commercialization of politics and the corrosion of our party’s values.”
Mukula called upon the NRM Chairman, the Central Executive Committee (CEC), and the Electoral Commission to urgently address the issues undermining the party’s internal democratic processes.
“It is imperative that the NRM reclaims its moral authority by addressing these vices and initiating reforms that will safeguard our internal democracy, restore integrity, and inspire confidence among our members and the wider population.”
Despite stepping down from the race, Mukula reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the NRM, the leadership of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, and the continued development of Eastern Uganda and the country as a whole.
“I will continue to serve the people of Uganda in whichever capacity I can, guided always by the principles of patriotism, integrity, and service above self.”
