Human rights lawyer Counsel George Musisi has faced the vetting panel at the National Unity Platform (NUP) headquarters in Makerere-Kavule, expressing his ambition to carry the party’s flag for Kira Municipality in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Musisi is seeking to unseat incumbent MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, a prominent figure in opposition politics. However, the lawyer remains confident in both his grassroots support and the integrity of the party’s vetting process.

“I have interfaced with the Elections Management Committee after expressing my interest to carry the party flag for Kira Municipality,” Musisi said after his vetting session.

He emphasized his trust in the NUP electoral committee, saying he will fully support whoever is chosen to carry the flag, but maintained optimism about his chances.

“I expect that after assessing all aspirants, the committee will find me the most suitable candidate. I’m optimistic I will be the flag bearer at the end of the day.”

Musisi acknowledged the competition within the party, as multiple aspirants are eyeing the same seat, but said this reflects the democratic spirit within NUP.

“Just like in many other constituencies, Kira has attracted a number of qualified aspirants. But at the end of the process, we hope the committee will choose the best candidate to represent the party and take on other contenders.”

He stressed the importance of transparency in the selection process, expressing confidence that the party’s primary goal is to win and that can only happen if it fronts strong candidates.

“If the party wants to win, it will field its strongest people. I believe that for Kira Municipality, I am that person,” he said.

Musisi’s move introduces a fresh twist to the race in Kira, a constituency currently represented by journalist-turned-politician Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, who has held the seat since 2011.

Musisi further emphasized that his bid is grounded in the real needs of the people of Kira Municipality.

“The people of Kira want services they want access to clean water, better roads, and proper representation. I believe I can mobilize the necessary resources and partnerships to deliver once I’m in Parliament,” he said.

He reiterated that leadership should be about impact, not just visibility, and pledged to prioritize service delivery and accountability if given the mandate.

The NUP primaries are expected to be highly competitive, especially in key urban constituencies, where the party enjoys strong support. Musisi’s candidacy adds another dynamic layer to what promises to be a heated contest.
