The Vice President, Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, was this morning duly nominated to contest for the Katakwi District Woman Member of Parliament seat on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket.
The Vice President was nominated by the Katakwi District Returning Officer, Stephen Makubuya, at the Electoral Commission offices.
The Electoral Commission designated Wednesday, October 22, and Thursday, October 23, 2025, as the official nomination dates for candidates contesting in the 2026 Parliamentary Elections.
The nominations are being conducted at the respective district and city headquarters across the country, beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 5:00 p.m. on each of the appointed dates.
Candidates are contesting for a total of 519 elective positions, including 353 directly elected MPs, 146 district and city woman representatives, and 20 seats for special interest groups — Older Persons, Persons with Disabilities, Workers, and Youth.
An aspirant for Member of Parliament must be a citizen of Uganda and a registered voter. The nomination of a candidate must be made by two registered voters appearing in person, who shall present the required documents to the Returning Officer.
While addressing journalists shortly after her nomination, Vice President Alupo reaffirmed her commitment to women and youth empowerment, education for children, and highlighted ongoing government projects in the Teso sub-region, including the construction of ferries, a public university, and investments in health, education, and security.
She also announced that President Yoweri Museveni will visit Napak on October 30 and Katakwi on November 1.
The Vice President pledged to use her position to lobby for more support to improve the livelihoods of her people through the NRM Party Manifesto.
She said that among the key issues to be addressed is poverty reduction among women, youth, and men through existing government programs such as the GROW Fund for Women, Women Fund, Youth Livelihood Program, Parish Development Model, and the Emyooga Fund, all aimed at eradicating poverty.
She further pledged to continue implementing programs in health, education, road infrastructure, and security, among other sectors.
Filled with joy after her successful nomination, Alupo urged the people of Katakwi to remain peaceful during the campaign period, emphasizing that no life should be lost because of politics.
She also called on her mobilizers to embark on grassroots mobilization and door-to-door campaigns to rally support for herself and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the NRM presidential candidate for 2026.
The Vice President later addressed supporters at Boma Grounds in Katakwi, at a ceremony graced by several dignitaries, including His Royal Highness the Emorimor Papa Iteso Paul Sande Emolot, the NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern Region David Echodu Calvin, and Prince Joseph Ndaula of Buganda with his wife.
