President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has extended compensation of Shs 5 million to families that lost loved ones in the recent devastating floods that hit the districts of Kween, Bukwo, and Kapchorwa.
Last week, heavy rains triggered floods and landslides across the Elgon subregion, leaving at least 24 people dead and causing widespread destruction in the three districts.
According to Lilian Aber, the State Minister for Disaster Preparedness, each bereaved family received Shs 5 million, while those who sustained injuries were given Shs 1 million.
“I spent the day visiting families and communities in Kween, Bukwo, and Kapchorwa districts in the Elgon subregion, who were recently affected by devastating landslides earlier this week. The disaster has left a trail of destruction—claiming lives and destroying homes, crops, roads, and bridges, and disrupting livelihoods across the region,” Aber said.
Together with Members of Parliament from the affected districts, the minister delivered condolences and financial support on behalf of the President.
“The Office of the Prime Minister is coordinating the entire operation to ensure the recovery of bodies, provision of shelter, evacuation, and delivery of relief items such as food and other essentials to Kween, Kapchorwa, and Bukwo districts,” she added.
Aber further noted that the Government of Uganda, in partnership with humanitarian agencies, remains committed to supporting all those affected, while implementing short-, medium-, and long-term measures to prevent and mitigate future disasters in the Elgon subregion.
