The President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has met with the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, ahead of his planned rallies in Rubaga North and South.
Kyagulanyi was accompanied by prominent party leaders, including the Vice President for the Buganda Region, Muwanga Kivumbi, and the Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LoP), Joel Ssenyonyi. He was welcomed by Oweek Israel Kazibwe Kitooke, the kingdom’s spokesman, and was ushered into the Katikkiro’s office at Bulange, Mengo, for a closed-door meeting.
During the meeting, he unveiled his campaign manifesto to the Katikkiro and other Kingdom ministers ahead of the forthcoming presidential elections.
The meeting comes amid ongoing reports of assaults and killings of Bobi Wine’s supporters. More than a month into the presidential campaigns, what began as peaceful gatherings has increasingly turned chaotic, with police repeatedly breaking up what they describe as illegal processions.
Two weeks ago, police and other security agencies of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) reportedly clashed with Bobi Wine’s team, injuring several people.
These incidents followed the shooting of Misakai (Meserch) Okello shortly after a NUP campaign rally in Iganga. Similar clashes also erupted in Kayunga, where tear gas and other crowd-control measures left several people injured.
