The Electoral Commission has declared National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Byamukama Fred unopposed as the Member of Parliament for Bugangaizi West Constituency.
Byamukama was declared by Honest Baguma, the Returning Officer for Kakumiro Electoral District.
“I, Honest Baguma, being the Returning Officer for Kakumiro Electoral District, pursuant to Section 31(1)(b) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, Cap. 177, hereby declare Byamukama Fred of the National Resistance Movement Party elected unopposed as Member of Parliament for Bugangaizi West Constituency, Kakumiro District,” the declaration reads.
Mosese Magogo, the President of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) and husband to the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, was declared unopposed after the Electoral Commission disqualified Daniel Mulirire, a former police officer, from contesting for the Budiope East parliamentary seat.
According to a letter signed by Justice Simon Byabakama, Mulirire failed to present a resignation letter at the time of his nomination.
Similarly, on Wednesday, Vice President Jessica Alupo was declared unopposed for the Katakwi District Woman Member of Parliament seat following the withdrawal of her only challenger.
The declaration was made by the Katakwi District Returning Officer, Stephen Makubuya at the district Electoral Commission office.
Byamukama, Magogo and Alupo joins a growing list of 16 unopposed Members of Parliament ahead of the 12th Parliament.
The unopposed NRM MPs include Anita Annet Among, Speaker of Parliament and Bukedea Woman MP; Thomas Tayebwa, Deputy Speaker and MP for Ruhinda North; Lillian Paparu Obiale, Arua Woman MP; and Ruth Rujoki Mushabe, Kiruhura Woman MP.
Others include Phiona Nyamutoro, Woman MP for Nebbi District; Ofwono Opondo, MP for Older Persons (Eastern Uganda); Jeniva Arinaitwe, MP for Rubirizi District; Emily Kugonza, MP for Buyanja East; Akumu Catherine Mavenjina, MP for Older Persons (Northern Uganda); and Emmanuel Banya, MP for Koboko County, among others.
Additional unopposed MPs are Peggy Joy Waako, National Female MP for Older Persons; Okot Boniface Henry, MP for Kole South Constituency; and Laura Kanushu Opori, National Female MP for Persons with Disabilities.
