The Kampala City Lord Mayor–elect, Eng. Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga, has pledged to offer equal opportunities to all Kampala city residents and to uphold transparency in the management of City Hall.

Last week, Balimwezo won the Kampala mayoral race with 141,220 votes, defeating incumbent mayor Elias Lukwago, who contested on the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) ticket.

Other candidates in the race included Naggayi Nabillah Sempala, Beatrice Mao of the Democratic Party (DP), Ibrahim Kasozi Biribawa of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Eddie Bazira Kibalama, and Jothan Yamureebire.

Nabillah Sempala garnered 43,615 votes, while Elias Lukwago came third with 41,915 votes. Beatrice Mao polled 2,162 votes.

Speaking ahead of the start of his term, Balimwezo pledged transparency in the awarding of contracts and other operations at City Hall.

“I am not corrupt, and I will never be corrupt. For those who think I will be soft-spoken and allow corruption, I am not that person. I am consistent, objective, and serious,” Balimwezo said.

He added:“I will offer equal opportunities to both the rich and the poor. Do not think that I can be corrupted—absolutely not.”

Balimwezo said his leadership would be guided by fairness and the rule of law.

“I was brought by God, and in God’s eyes, all of us are equal. Therefore, for those who fear that rich people will terrorize the poor, that is cheap talk,” he said.

“I am a competent leader and ready to lead all people equally, guided by the law and not applying it selectively. The law will apply to the rich who try to terrorize my people, and it will equally apply to the poor who choose to commit offenses.”
