Former presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye is reportedly improving following his recent health condition, Daily Star has learned.
The revelation was made by Winnie Byanyima, Besigye’s wife.
Last week, Besigye was reported to have fallen ill and was rushed from Luzira Prison to a medical facility at Bugolobi Village Mall under heavy security deployment.
Byanyima said her husband is slowly and painfully beginning to respond to treatment, despite being denied permission to leave prison for proper medical care.
“Despite this slight improvement, Besigye remains extremely weak. He was unable to walk from his cell to the visitors’ reception. I met him in a small office next to his cell. I had to hold back tears as I watched him slowly make his way back afterwards, clinging to the walls to avoid falling, returning to an oven-hot, dark, bedbug-infested cell,” she said.
She added that Dr. Kizza Besigye is being deliberately denied the medical care he trusts and requires. She said he should not be held in squalid, unhealthy conditions that endanger his recovery and his life, but instead be under the care of his family and personal doctor.
Byanyima further claimed that every day Besigye remains ill, every day he is forced to endure pain, weakness and the humiliation of the appalling prison conditions, is the responsibility of his captors.
