MTN Mobile Money Uganda has appointed Sarah Bateta Okwi as its Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective 1 March 2026, following the decision by Richard Yego to step down from the role.
The appointment comes as MTN Mobile Money continues its transition into a fully independent fintech company, distinct from MTN Uganda’s core telecommunications business.
Okwi, who currently serves as Chief Finance Officer, will lead the organization in an acting capacity while the Board undertakes the process of appointing a substantive Chief Executive Officer
Richard Yego will formally exit the position at the end of February 2026, concluding a four-year tenure during which the business recorded significant growth and transformation.
Under his leadership, MTN Mobile Money Uganda expanded its product portfolio, advanced digital financial inclusion, strengthened regulatory compliance, and reinforced its position as one of the country’s leading digital financial services providers.
The Board thanked Yego for his leadership and his contribution to the company’s growth and success.
Okwi brings nearly 20 years of experience within the MTN Group, having held several senior leadership roles. In her current role as Chief Finance Officer, she has been instrumental in strengthening financial governance, enhancing regulatory compliance, and building operational resilience.
The Board reassured customers, partners, and stakeholders that MTN Mobile Money Uganda remains stable and fully operational, with all services continuing as normal during the leadership transition.
