Oil production has been suspended at the Rumaila oil field,  one of the world’s largest oil fields — according to local sources cited by Shafaq News on Tuesday.

Sources said operations at the vast southern Iraqi field were completely halted following disruptions to export activity linked to ongoing military developments in the region. The interruptions reportedly caused on-site storage facilities and reservoirs to reach full capacity, leaving operators unable to continue production.

The Rumaila field, located near Basra in southern Iraq, is a cornerstone of the country’s oil output and a significant contributor to global energy markets. Any prolonged shutdown could have wider implications for international supply flows.

Amid rising regional tensions — particularly involving the United States, Israel and Iran — Iraqi army units have been deployed across the Al-Zubair area, west of Basra. Backed by armored vehicles, the forces are tasked with securing oil fields and other strategically sensitive infrastructure.

Authorities have not announced a timeline for the resumption of operations. The situation remains fluid as security concerns and export conditions continue to evolve.
