The body of Seyyed Ali Khamenei will be buried in the northeastern city of Mashhad following state-organised mourning and farewell ceremonies, according to Fars News Agency.

Funeral committee officials are preparing a large public ceremony in Tehran, where citizens are expected to gather for a final tribute. Authorities said details of the procession and burial program will be announced once logistical and security arrangements are finalised.

Mashhad, Khamenei’s birthplace, is home to the revered Imam Reza Shrine — one of the most sacred sites in Shiite Islam and a major pilgrimage destination. His father, Ayatollah Seyyed Javad Khamenei, is buried within the shrine complex, reinforcing the family’s longstanding spiritual ties to the city.

The decision to lay the late leader to rest in Mashhad carries symbolic weight, linking his personal history to one of the Islamic Republic’s most important religious centres.

Nationwide mourning continues across Iran, with authorities expected to tighten security around key religious institutions and government sites as commemorations unfold. The funeral is anticipated to draw significant domestic and international attention.
