Uganda is set to host a regional resource centre that will provide information, support services and learning resources for persons with disabilities under an initiative driven by alumni of the Chevening Scholarships.

The project is part of efforts by Ugandan beneficiaries of the UK Government scholarship programme to give back to society after completing postgraduate studies abroad. Many of the alumni have returned to Uganda after attaining Master’s and PhD degrees and are now spearheading initiatives aimed at strengthening inclusive education and social development.

Once completed, the centre will serve as a regional hub for disability-related information and resources, supporting learning institutions, researchers and communities working to advance inclusion for persons with disabilities.

During a joint visit to the Kampala School for the Physically Handicapped, Hellen Kawesa said the project, which began in 2022, still requires about Shs100 million to be completed.

The visit was also attended by Emma Hennessey, Head of the Scholarships Unit in the UK Government, who is currently in Uganda to evaluate the impact of Chevening alumni activities and assess how scholarship beneficiaries are contributing to development in their home country.

The initiative reflects the growing role of alumni networks in championing inclusive education and building support systems for persons with disabilities both in Uganda and across the region.
