Airtel Africa, in partnership with SpaceX, has successfully completed testing of data and messaging services via Starlink Mobile in Kenya, a major step toward delivering satellite-to-mobile connectivity to millions across Airtel Africa’s 14 markets.
The tests were conducted in areas with no terrestrial mobile coverage. In these locations, Starlink Mobile was seamlessly activated, enabling 4G-compatible smartphones to connect to Starlink’s constellation of 650 satellites and maintain reliable connectivity.
During the testing phase, users were able to access light-data applications including WhatsApp calling and messaging, Google Maps, Facebook Messenger, and complete financial transactions through the Airtel app. Even in the most remote areas, essential digital services remained uninterrupted.
Sunil Taldar, Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa, said: “We are excited to move from announcement to action with our partners at SpaceX. This testing phase in Kenya demonstrates our commitment to expanding access globally. By integrating Starlink Mobile technology, we are ensuring that our customers stay connected even when beyond our terrestrial network.”
Building on the insights from the Kenya tests, Airtel Africa and Starlink Mobile plan to extend the service across all 14 Airtel Africa markets, including Uganda, subject to local regulatory approvals.
The partnership also aims to introduce voice calling and enhanced data services through Starlink Mobile V2 technology, enabling broadband connectivity directly to mobile devices.
