In a dramatic shakeup within Uganda’s defence hierarchy, Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has fired Brigadier Abdul Rugumayo, the Deputy Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security, sending ripples through the country’s military establishment.
The move comes amid a wave of uncertainty, as two other senior officers, including General Don Nabasa and Brigadier Johnson Namanya, face arrest orders.
Brig Rugumayo, formerly a key figure in the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), has been redeployed to the Defence Headquarters in Mbuya. His replacement, Brigadier General Oscar Munanura, previously headed Counter-Intelligence operations, now steps into one of the army’s most sensitive roles.
Details surrounding the dismissals and arrests remain scarce, fueling speculation over possible internal disagreements, security lapses, or fallout from ongoing intelligence operations. Analysts say such abrupt leadership changes at the apex of Uganda’s defence intelligence are rare and could signal strategic recalibrations within the military.
