Incumbent Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has retained his position after defeating Fort Portal Woman MP Asinansi Nyakato and Dokolo District Woman MP Sarah Aguti Nyangkori in a tightly contested race.

Tayebwa’s victory secures his continued hold on the office, extending his tenure after serving as Deputy Speaker during the 11th Parliament. Tayebwa polled  447 votes, Nyakato 45 while Aguti  garnered 14 votes.

The hotly contested election, held at Kololo Independence Grounds, drew significant national attention as Members of Parliament competed for top leadership positions in the 12th Parliament.

His re-election signals continuity in the leadership of Parliament, as he resumes his role of deputising the Speaker in presiding over House proceedings, guiding debate, and ensuring order in legislative business.

Tayebwa will work alongside newly elected Speaker Jacob Oboth-Oboth in steering the affairs of the 12th Parliament.

Political observers say the outcome reflects sustained confidence among legislators in Tayebwa’s leadership, despite strong competition in the race.

More details on the final vote tally and transition are expected to emerge.
