Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has been charged with misprision of treason following two days of arrest.

On Monday, Security agencies of police and the Special Forces Command (SFC) invaded the home of Lukwago and Wakaliga, a Kampala suburb leading to his arrest and subsequent detention at an revealed facility.

Eyewitnesses said heavily armed soldiers first sealed off the perimeter of Lukwago’s home before moving in and taking him into custody.

Earlier today, Lukwago was transferred to Kira Division police where he was charged and held for about five hours be being driven to Makindye Magistrates Court where he was charged with misprision of treason

While recording statement, police allowed only two people lawyer Medard Ssegona and Nnaalongo Zawedde Lukwago (wife to Erias Lukwago) to access the  Lukwago.

Prosecution avers that between 2021 and 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya, Lukwago, together with others including Joel Wakayima, Frank Atukunda, Hajj Obed Kamulegeya Dr. Kizza Besigye, intended to commit treason but failed to inform the relevant authorities, including the Minister or an officer in charge of a police station.

Following his charging, Lukwago, through his lawyers led by former Busiro County East MP Medard Ssegona, applied for bail.

Lukwago’s defence contended that the applicant is a lawyer of advanced age and suffers from a back medical condition, and pleaded that he be granted bail. The defence further prayed that, if not released on bail, he be provided with a cardiac bed and an orthopedic mattress.

he was remanded to Luzira Prison till June 22, 2026.
