In Uganda’s rapidly evolving digital age, influence is no longer measured solely by the size of a business empire, the value of investments or the number of properties one owns. Increasingly, public figures are being judged by how they use their visibility and resources to create opportunities for others.

For Yassin Ssentongo Segawa, widely known on social media as “Happy Daddy for Kids,” success has become closely associated with giving back. The businessman, philanthropist and social media personality has built a public identity that combines corporate leadership, youth empowerment, entertainment and charity.

Born on November 3, 1986, Segawa serves as the Group Sales and Marketing Director of Ham Group of Companies, one of Uganda’s largest indigenous business conglomerates founded by his elder brother, businessman Dr Hamis Kiggundu. Yet beyond the boardroom, Segawa has become increasingly recognised for his work with children, support for vulnerable communities and investment in young talent.

While many business executives remain behind corporate walls, Segawa has embraced a public-facing role that has made him one of Uganda’s most recognisable social media personalities.

From family business to corporate leadership

Segawa’s journey into business began long before he joined Ham Group of Companies.

Together with his elder brother, he was exposed to entrepreneurship at an early age through their father, Hajji Haruna Segawa, who operated a textile business. The experience introduced them to the realities of commerce, customer service and investment.

Over the years, Hamis Kiggundu transformed those early lessons into Ham Group of Companies, expanding from real estate into sectors including agro-processing, logistics, hospitality, education, entertainment and technology.

Within the group, Segawa has played a key role in driving sales, marketing and brand visibility. However, unlike his brother, whose public profile is largely defined by billion-shilling investments and landmark developments, Segawa has built his image around people and community engagement.

That distinction has helped him cultivate a following that extends beyond traditional business circles.

The rise of “Happy Daddy for Kids”

Much of Segawa’s popularity stems from his social media presence.

His videos frequently feature him interacting with children, dancing, sharing light-hearted moments and spending time with his daughter, Zoya. These interactions earned him the nickname “Happy Daddy for Kids,” a title that has become central to his public identity.

His daughter has also become a social media sensation in her own right, attracting a substantial online following. Their father-daughter bond has resonated with audiences and contributed to Segawa’s reputation as a relatable and family-oriented public figure.

The popularity of Zoya’s content even inspired musician Victor Ruz to release a song dedicated to her.

Yet for Segawa, children represent more than content creation and entertainment. His growing philanthropic work reflects a desire to support children who lack the opportunities available to many others.

Investing in young lives

Segawa has increasingly focused his charitable activities on supporting vulnerable children and young people.

His interventions have included providing education support, food, clothing, healthcare assistance and welfare support to disadvantaged families.

Among the beneficiaries is young content creator Rango Tenge Tenge, whom Segawa supported with education at Hana International School.

The support reflects a broader philosophy that long-term empowerment is often more valuable than temporary assistance.

He has also contributed to medical causes. One of the most notable examples was his donation of Shs 5 million towards the treatment of Jayden, a young TikTok content creator living with sickle cell disease who required a bone marrow transplant.

Such interventions have strengthened his reputation as someone willing to use his resources to respond to individual and community needs.

Supporting talent and creativity

Beyond welfare and education, Segawa has positioned himself as a supporter of young talent.

He has supported grassroots boxing initiatives, local football tournaments and youth sporting activities aimed at giving young people opportunities to showcase their abilities.

His involvement reflects a belief that talent is widespread but opportunities are often limited.

The businessman has also become increasingly active in Uganda’s entertainment industry. Over the years, he has supported several artists, including King Saha, Alien Skin, Spice Diana, Pallaso and Sheebah Karungi.

In 2024, he launched Flock Records, a music label intended to identify, mentor and develop emerging talent.

The initiative seeks to address a longstanding challenge within Uganda’s creative industry, where many talented artists struggle to convert popularity into sustainable careers due to limited access to professional management, branding and distribution.

Through Flock Records, Segawa hopes to provide young creatives with the support systems needed to grow their careers while exploring partnerships beyond Uganda’s borders.

A different model of influence

Observers often contrast Segawa’s public image with that of his elder brother.

While Hamis Kiggundu is widely associated with large-scale infrastructure and commercial investments, Segawa has built his influence through relationships, community engagement and philanthropy.

The distinction is captured in a statement often attributed to him:

“My brother builds towers; I build ladders. Towers lift a few; ladders let many climb.”

The phrase reflects his desire to use his influence to create opportunities for others rather than simply showcase personal success.

Whether through education support, healthcare interventions, talent development or youth empowerment, Segawa’s activities are increasingly centred on helping others access opportunities that might otherwise remain out of reach.

Building a legacy beyond business

At 39, Segawa continues to balance his corporate responsibilities with his philanthropic ambitions.

His growing involvement in community development, entertainment and youth empowerment has helped shape a public identity that is distinct from the business empire with which his name is associated.

As Uganda grapples with challenges such as youth unemployment, limited opportunities and unequal access to education, Segawa’s model of philanthropy offers a different perspective on business leadership.

For him, success is not simply about accumulating wealth. It is about converting that wealth, influence and visibility into opportunities for others.

In a country where many young people are searching for someone willing to open a door, Segawa has chosen to use his platform to create pathways for those still trying to find their footing.

That is why “Happy Daddy for Kids” has evolved from a social media nickname into a personal brand associated with generosity, mentorship and empowerment.

For Yassin Ssentongo Segawa, the measure of success is not only how high one climbs, but how many others are helped to climb alongside them.
