President Yoweri Museveni has expressed his deep sorrow over the death of Pope Francis, the revered spiritual leader of the Catholic Church, who passed away yesterday at the age of 88 in his residence at the Vatican. According to the Vatican, the Holy Father succumbed to a stroke and heart failure.

“It is with profound sadness that I have received the news of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis,” President Museveni stated.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of the Republic of Uganda, and on my own behalf, I extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to you and, through you, to the entire Catholic Church worldwide.”

President Museveni described Pope Francis as an extraordinary spiritual leader and a highly respected theologian, whose steadfast commitment to the faith revitalized the Church’s mission in an increasingly secular world. He praised the Pope’s unwavering advocacy for peace, social justice, compassion, and humility—values that inspired millions across the globe.

He further noted the Pope’s openness and enthusiasm for interfaith dialogue, particularly with Muslims, Orthodox Christians, and others, highlighting him as a religious leader who truly walked in the footsteps of Jesus, as illustrated in the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:29–37).

“His legacy of love, unity, and service to humanity will endure for generations to come,” Museveni added.

“We stand in solidarity with Catholics in Uganda and around the world during this time of mourning.”
