MTN and partners –Bayobab Uganda, Maendeleo Foundation, Clinic Pesa, MUBS Entrepreneurship, Towerco of Africa Uganda Limited, Transtel, Daj, EBO Financial Services, and Pro bono – extended a range of support to Tooro Kingdom as it concluded the 2025 edition of its annual staff volunteerism campaign, 21 Days of Y’ello Care.
The company’s staff handed over a fully equipped ICT hub with ten internet-ready computers to Best Nursery and Primary School in Fort Portal. The facility, powered by solar energy, is expected to benefit both learners and the wider community, particularly during school holidays when it will open to the public.
The school educates 484 pupils, including 30 orphans and vulnerable children aged 3 to 6 years, who reside at the Queen Mother Best Orphanage. However, due to limited shelter, bedding, and play materials, these children share dormitory accommodations.
MTN and partners also installed a solar system, partitioned the orphanage to create separate spaces for male and female children, planted fruit trees, provided mattress, books, leveled the playground, and installed new play equipment—all aimed at enhancing safety, privacy, and supporting the children’s well-being and nutrition.
At Tooro Babies Home, MTNers through MTN Women@work initiative raised UGX 20 million to support medical care and provide daily necessities for orphaned infants, along with assorted items such as detergents, cooking oil, and television sets.
“Our support to Tooro Kingdom goes beyond technology. It is about restoring dignity, expanding opportunity, and strengthening communities from the ground up,” said MTN Uganda CEO Sylvia Mulinge during the handover event.
Pramesh Ramparsad, the CEO OF Towerco of Africa Uganda Limited said the solar system is set to reduce the orphanage’s current power related costs by 70% while providing availability to clean energy during grid power outages.
“Towerco of Africa Uganda is proud to partner with MTN Uganda in a shared commitment to sustainable development by investing in clean energy solutions, not only reducing the carbon print but also helping to unlock opportunities for further learning and growth,” he said.
The Queen Mother of Tooro, Her Royal Highness Best Kemigisa Akiiki, hailed the partnership. “This initiative by MTN Uganda comes as a blessing to our Kingdom. Supporting our children with education and care is the greatest investment in the future of Tooro,” she said.
Held under the theme “Connecting at the Roots – Connecting Communities through Digital Tools,” the 2025 Y’ello Care campaign has delivered similar interventions countrywide including in Kampala in partnership with the Kampala Capital City Authority in the Central region, the Nnabagereka Development Foundation in the Greater Central Region, Busoga Kingdom in the Eastern Region and , and the Alur Kingdom in the Northern Region—focusing on digital inclusion, healthcare, agribusiness, and youth empowerment.
“The ICT hub is a game-changer,” said Abraham Okiring, head teacher at Best Nursery and Primary School. “Our learners now have access to digital tools that will inspire curiosity, creativity, and confidence.”
MTN Uganda said it remains committed to long-term development through its Ambition 2025 strategy, which focuses on driving digital and financial inclusion in underserved communities.
“This may mark the end of this year’s Y’ello Care, but our journey with Tooro continues,” said Mulinge. “We will keep walking alongside the people of this Kingdom to build a more connected, empowered, and inclusive Uganda.”
Launched in 2007, the 21 Days of Y’ello Care campaign is MTN Uganda’s flagship employee volunteer initiative, designed to encourage MTN staff—known as MTNers—to dedicate their time, skills, and expertise towards driving positive social impact in the communities they serve.
