The Electoral Commission has officially nominated President Yoweri Museveni as a candidate in the upcoming 2026 Presidential Elections.

President Museveni, accompanied by First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni, was received by party leaders before proceeding to the nomination desk at the Electoral Commission headquarters in Lubowa.

His nomination was formally declared by Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission and Returning Officer for Presidential Nominations.

“Having fulfilled the nomination requirements under the Presidential Elections Act, Cap 179, I therefore declare Yoweri Museveni as a duly nominated candidate for the 2026 presidential elections,” Justice Byabakama announced.

According to the nomination guidelines, a presidential aspirant must be a Ugandan citizen by birth, at least 18 years of age, registered on the national voters’ register, and must submit certified copies of academic qualifications verifying attainment of at least an Advanced Level (A’Level) certificate or its equivalent. Additionally, proof of payment of the Shs 20 million nomination fee is required.

Other nominated candidates include Elton Joseph Mabirizi, President of the Conservative Party (CP), and Robert Kasibante of the National Peasants Party (NPP).

Following his nomination, President Museveni thanked NRM members for entrusting him with the party flag and pledged to fulfill the party’s promises, including transforming Uganda’s economy into a higher middle-income status.
