The Electoral Commission (EC) has reopened nominations for several local government seats following a series of mysterious candidate deaths that have shaken preparations for the 2026 general elections.

In a press release issued on October 23, 2025, EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama described the decision as a response to the “unfortunate circumstances” that claimed the lives of multiple nominees across several districts.

Among the deceased are Elijah Kizza, 58, an NRM sub-county chairperson hopeful for Nangabo, who collapsed and died mid-speech during a campaign event, and Sarah Nakato, a vibrant NUP candidate from Mukono, who reportedly succumbed to malaria complications a few days later.

Justice Byabakama’s statement reflected both duty and grief, emphasizing that democracy must continue even as communities mourn fallen candidates. “It is a painful reminder that public service comes with unexpected trials,” the statement noted.

The EC announced that fresh nominations will take place from October 27 to 28, allowing political parties and independent aspirants to replace their deceased representatives.

With at least five candidates reported dead since September, the Commission now faces the delicate task of balancing electoral timelines with the realities of loss. As campaigns resume, some local leaders admit they are “campaigning and praying in equal measure” to make it safely to polling day.
